at the Alaska Geobotany Center

File Extensions for some common file types

The Alaska Geobotany Center uses the following extensions to indicate the format of a data file. The extension typically consists of the last three or four characters that follow the period in the filename.

dBase file, generally exported from an Excel or an ESRI application

Microsoft Excel spreadsheet

ESRI Arc/Info export file
.lyr
ESRI ArcGIS layer file
.gz
file compressed using the Gnu GZIP algorithm. Compressed files will typically have the .gz appended to the original file extension.
.zip
ZIP compressed file, generally produced using the 7-Zip freeware compression utility.
